Standard Chartered's ex-digibank CTO returns to Singapore with insurance giant
Since its launch in 2022, Standard Chartered's Singapore digibank, Trust Bank, has reached more than one million customers and $3.8bn in deposit balances. The man in charge of Trust's technology before and after launch left Singapore back in 2023, but now he's back with a bigger gig.

John Pountain has joined insurance firm Chubb as its Asia CTO. The firm has 43,000 employees, primarily in the US, but Asia is its second-largest operation with 800 offices in 15 countries, according to its most recent annual report. Its life insurance operation alone, which operates across nine APAC countries, has more than 6,000 employees.
Pountain spent two years with Standard Chartered as the CTO of Trust Bank from 2021 to 2023. It's one of just five digibanks in Singapore with an official license, with competitors like Grab's GXS Bank. He was hired by the bank after a two-year stint as CTO of Australian neobank Xinja, which has since ceased operations.
After leaving Trust Bank, Pountain spent time in both Vietnam and Australia. He first joined Hanoi based bank Techcombank as its CTO, then left to become a director at IT consultancy DXC.
Pountain isn't the first ex-banking technologist to take an executive role at Chubb. In 2023, Deutsche Bank's CTO Gordon Mackechnie left to become Chubb's global CTO, based in New York.
