Nomura hired HSBC's chief architect in London as an MD
Japanese bank Nomura will turn 100 years old later this year and, like most 100-year-old organizations, it has its share of legacy technology. To help rectify this, the bank has just hired HSBC's chief architect, a cloud technology specialist.
Jonathan Wrobel has joined Nomura as an MD and chief architect, working within the bank's CTO function. He spent the last 16 years at HSBC, most recently managing a 1,200-person team.
Wrobel was promoted to MD at HSBC in 2021 after spending three years as the bank's chief cloud architect; he was given distinguished engineer status while in the role. Frank McGrath, former HSBC CTO, said on LinkedIn in December that Wrobel is "undoubtedly one of the foremost Public Cloud experts in the industry."
Wrobel will have matrixed accountability across the bank's global infrastructure teams, and will report to Nomura's current chief technology officer, Dinesh Keswani according to a person familiar with the matter. It's a reunion of sorts; Keswani was CTO and CIO for digital at HSBC prior to joining Nomura. In an interview with The Stack last year, he warned of impending tech debt in the bank's cloud infrastructure; Wrobel will presumably play a role in fixing that.
