Today's report from the New York State Comptroller suggests New York Securities Industry Employment is at a record level. Forget AI, the Comptroller estimates that 5,300 new jobs will be added this year alone. This would be the fifth year that employment has risen.
These jobs pay well. Last year, average pay (salary and bonus) was $562k, of which $247k was bonus. This year, rising profits and a 19% increase in compensation spending in the first half suggest pay will rise higher again. This is unexpected: the city had been expecting a 20% decline in the bonus pool versus 2025.
If the Comptroller is right, reports of AI destroying jobs in Manhattan are overdone. However, it's not unusual for the preliminary jobs numbers to be heavily revised. Typically, though, they are revised upwards.
And if you can't find a New York City securities job paying $562k? Don't beat yourself up. Although $562k is the average, the report also notes that 64% of securities industry employees in the city have traditionally earned $250k or less; this is unlikely to have changed.
