ex-Barclays MD achieves Citi job with enormous commute

There are some reasonable demands to make on both ends of a job negotiation – on job titles, compensation, that sort of thing. A less common demand is the right to commute into your office from the countryside of a foreign country.

Jeremy Monnier spent nearly six years as a managing director (MD) at Barclays in London, most recently running the bank’s foreign exchange strategy and structuring crew. He was with Deutsche Bank for a decade in the city before that, also as an MD, and was global head of foreign exchange structuring.

Monnier left Barclays at the end of 2023, and spent 2024 on a career break. As of this week, he’s at Citi, although it's not clear what he's doing there - he did not respond to a request for comment on this article. He's based in the Paris office and is working on a hybrid basis. 

Monnier spoke to Business Insider early last year about the process of finding a new job. His biggest demand was that he wanted to commute into a London office (or Paris, if the opportunity existed) from his home in Rouen, Normandy, for three days a week. It seems that he has achieved this aim. The commute will be harsh: Rouen is 142km from Paris.
