Deutsche Bank's data fixing MD from Citi just got promoted

Nine months ago, Eugene Gilerson swapped a rock for a hard place. After leaving Credit Suisse for Citi to work on its technology transformation amidst its notable data issues, he left again for Deutsche Bank, which was having similar problems. Rather than leaving his new gig, however, Gilerson just got a promotion.

Gilerson has now become Deutsche Bank's global chief data officer, having served as its US chief data officer since joining. He replaces Anabel Almagro, who has left the firm and did not respond to a request for comment. Almagro joined Deutsche in late 2023 from Dutch bank ING, where she was also chief data officer.

Deutsche Bank lost its old data sheriff shortly after losing a deputy. Marie Lauri, an MD in the chief data office and a deputy CDO, left after 14 years to join SocGen back in March. She likened her experience in the role at points to climbing Mount Everest.

Despite taking up global responsibilities for the European bank, Gilerson will be staying put in New York. He'll be reporting to Bernd Leukert, the firm's chief technology, data and innovation officer, who sits on Deutsche Bank's management board. No decisions have been made on regional CDO appointments yet.

Deutsche Bank's data transformation team has been busy since the US Federal Reserve fined Deutsche Bank $186m over its money laundering controls and demanded that the bank improve its data management systems. To address concerns, it entered into a ten-year partnership with Google Cloud, which is thought to be costing the bank €130m per year ($1.36bn). However, its overall optimization efforts are expected to cut €500m in costs this year alone.

Deutsche Bank declined to comment.
