Deutsche Bank hired a European bank's ex-head of UK M&A
As we noted yesterday, the M&A scene in the UK hasn't grown nearly as quickly as it has in the US, and getting in on the biggest deals is becoming more important than ever. Deutsche Bank, seemingly aware of this, is bolstering its ranks, and just hired the former head of UK M&A at Santander.

Alex Smith joined Deutsche Bank earlier this month as a managing director. He most recently spent three and a half years at KBW, a boutique bank owned by Stifel, and worked at Santander for four years before that.
Deutsche Bank did not respond to a request for comment regarding his official title, but it's likely he'll be working in its financial institutions group (FIG). KBW specializes in financial services and fintech, and Smith previously worked as Mediobanca's head of FIG for the UK, Ireland and the Nordics. He also worked in Morgan Stanley's FIG team from the late 2000s into the early 2010s as a managing director covering the UK and South Africa.
Smith is just one of many senior bankers that Deutsche Bank wants to bring in. It announced late last year that it planned to hire 60 senior bankers across advisory and ECM to grow its share of the global banking fee pool. In Q2, the bank's front office headcount had increased by just under 200 people year-on-year.
