Q&A: How to get a graduate job at Gazprom Marketing and Trading
We spoke to Alistair Milnes, head of global resourcing at Gazprom Marketing and Trading. This is what Alistair said about Gazprom's graduate hiring progamme.
Q: Are there any particular universities that you target for graduate hiring at Gazprom Marketing and Trading (GM&T)?
We look to target graduates from the top tier universities in the UK and overseas who are driven, talented individuals whose skills, imagination and 'can-do' attitude matches our own ambitions. They're easily recognisable as those with the potential to grow into leaders of the future, and the type of people who can make a positive impact on our company as they contribute to our growing success. You can learn more about our graduate scheme here.
Q: Do you like to hire graduates who’ve studied particular subjects?
We look for people who’ve studied numerically based courses. That might be economics or maths, but it could also be science and engineering. This year we’re sponsoring the undergraduate of the year award for students in Maths, Economics and Finance we’re offering internships and the winner gets a placement in our Singapore office.
Q: Do you hire MBAs?
Yes, we’re interested in people with MBA qualifications along with relevant skills and experience for the roles we are advertising, but we don’t have a formal MBA intake.
Q: How many places do you offer each year on your graduate programme in London?
Q: And how many applications do you receive for those places?
Q: That’s a lot! How do you manage to whittle all those applicants down to the 25 you make offers to?
We have a structure assessment process where we look to build a well rounded profile of each graduate. With GM&T being a very values led business we look to assess the graduates against our teamwork, excellence, communication and innovation values. This is done on a number of occasions throughout the process starting with the initial application where they are ask to share examples of the values in the experiences to date. Following the initial application the graduates will go through two online tests, one numerical and one verbal, and in some cases they may be asked to complete a logic based assessment. There would also be a telephone interview when we once again look at a values based competency screening before people are invited to attend an assessment centre. At the assessment centre the graduates will be set 3 tasks to complete.
Q: Can you clarify what those tasks involve?
The first is a commercially focused group based task, they will then take part in a values based individual task before finally having a face to face interview with a manager from the business.
Q: Can Russian graduates apply for a place on your graduate training scheme in London?
We’re open to all graduates who have a right to work in the UK once their study visa expires. The new UK immigration rules have cut out a lot of really good graduate talent from outside the European Union.
Q: Do you hire students directly into trading roles?
No – you can’t come straight from graduation and become a trader. You can, however, join our commercial and front office analytics stream. This is a research-based function which provides the data that supports our traders. This scheme is also the entry point for graduate operator roles within our operations team. People in these roles tend to be very analytical and mathematical as a result.
